What is Kung Fu? pt 01 – The Ancient Art That Forged Warriors
You have entered What is Kung Fu 101 — Part 01. This is the free public gate into the International Kajukenbo Association. It is not a highlight reel. It is not a belt mill. It is a seven-lesson map of the Chinese martial tradition so that when you later train Kajukenbo and Wun Hop Kuen Do, you know what you stand inside.
Hold one standard for this room, digital or live:
- Honor the lineage. Credit origins. Do not steal methods and rename them.
- Train Mind, Body, and Spirit as one unit — not three hobbies.
- Treat history as responsibility, not entertainment.
How this course runs
Each section is one gate: a short lesson, one practice, one written reflection, one short quiz. Complete them in order. Sloppy clicking is not training.
Physical work in Part 01 is stance, breath, and air movement only. No live striking. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must hold the account.
Where this leads
Finish Part 01 and you hold a certificate of completion. That certificate is the recommended first step into:
- Wun Hop Kuen Do: Dacascos Method – Year One (White to Yellow Sash)
- Warriors Forge / Kūlia Kajukenbo Warriors Year 1 (Grades 6-8 and all-ages online)
- Kajukenbo Kids (ages 6-16, in person)
- The live academy floor
From this moment you are a student of a living lineage. How you train, how you carry yourself, and how you speak of the art will either honor or cheapen everyone who kept it alive.
Stand up. We begin.
Kung fu is earned skill. Not a costume.
Kung fu is not the Chinese word for punching. The term is gongfu (功夫): skill acquired through time, labor, and honest repetition. A carpenter can have gongfu. A calligrapher can have gongfu. A fighter can have gongfu.
When this Association says kung fu, we mean the Chinese martial inheritance — wushu, quanfa, chuan fa — as it was tested, transmitted, and later fused on Hawaiian streets. You are not collecting random techniques. You are entering a process.
Three frames you will keep for the rest of the course
System: the large body of knowledge. Chinese martial arts. Kajukenbo as a hybrid system.
Style: a recognizable family inside the system. Shaolin. Hung Gar. Wing Chun. Wun Hop Kuen Do.
Method / Expression: how a living teacher organizes that style for real people. The Dacascos Method. The I.K.A. Method.
Wun Hop Kuen Do means combination fist art style. It is a Kajukenbo branch founded by Sifu Al Dacascos. It is not generic kung fu. It is a Hawaiian-forged expression of Chinese boxing standing on the Palama Settlement experiment of 1947.
The I.K.A. contract
- Honor the lineage. Credit origins.
- Train the Mind-Body-Spirit triangle as one unit.
- Treat history as responsibility.
Practice (do this before you leave the lesson)
Stand in Horse Stance for two minutes. Breathe through the nose. When you finish, write one sentence: “I am turning toward __________.” That sentence is your first salutation to the art.
Key terms

Next: submit your Turning Sentence assignment, then take Quiz 01.
