The Fist Is Older Than Any Temple
If you believe kung fu was invented by one monk in one courtyard, you will train like a tourist.
Chinese fighting did not begin at Shaolin. Bronze Age and early imperial records already show archery, chariot warfare, the dagger-axe (ge), spear, wrestling (jiao li), and unarmed striking. The Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods produced swordsmen, knights-errant, and military specialists.
The Han court staged martial spectacles.
By the time Buddhist monasteries rose in north China, the culture already knew how to fight.
Four streams that feed the later arts
Military training: standardized weapons, formations, examinations.
Folk and family systems: village boxing, escort-guard methods, opera troupes.
Health and self-cultivation: daoyin, breathing, animal observation, later qigong.
Story and myth: heroes, outlaws, and the idea of the righteous fighter. Useful. Not a substitute for records.
Animal observation is not a cartoon. Southern systems abstracted the crane’s balance, the tiger’s short power, the snake’s angle, the leopard’s burst, the dragon’s coiling intent. Kajukenbo’s Chinese side — the Bo, Chinese boxing / Chuan Fa — inherits this vocabulary. In Wun Hop Kuen Do you will later meet Lo Han / 18 Hands material as a foundation form, not as museum display.
Practice
Walk a room slowly for five minutes. On each step decide: root or advance. That is the ancient problem of the fighter, when to stay heavy, when to move. Do not bounce. Place the foot.
