Kulia Academy
Kajukenbo Warriors
Program Overview
Kūlia Kajukenbo Warriors is a character-first martial arts enrichment program at Kūlia Academy in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Led by Professor Sean Harflinger, 8th Degree Black Belt and sacred stamp holder of the International Kajukenbo Association (IKA), the program integrates traditional Kajukenbo training with modern youth development to forge confident, disciplined, and compassionate warriors.
Our Vision
Control the self before the opponent. We transform middle school students (primarily 6th–8th grade) into stewards who honor their roles, protect their partners, and build unbreakable character. Students evolve from novices into leaders — divine in spirit (integrity, empathy, compassion), strong in body (practical self-defense, fitness, coordination), and kind in mind (emotional intelligence, communication, resilience).
Core Philosophy – The Three Pillars
- Mind (Discipline & Focus): Emotional regulation, self-awareness, conflict resolution, and mental toughness.
- Body (Strength & Skill): Practical Kajukenbo fundamentals, conditioning, footwork, stances, blocks, strikes, kicks, and controlled partner drills.
- Spirit (Honor & Stewardship): Respect, integrity, service to others, and the daily code of honor.
Guiding Principle (repeated daily): “To be a good steward is to honor what you are doing.”

Class Structure (60-Minute Daily Sessions)
Every Kūlia Kajukenbo Warriors session follows a structured, high-energy flow designed for focus, skill development, character growth, and safety. Classes meet during 7th period in our dedicated training hall.
1. Arrival Ritual (3 minutes) Students line up in assigned spots, perform a respectful salute/bow-in, and complete a brief breathing reset. This sets the tone of focus and respect for the entire class.
2. Dynamic Warm-Up (8–10 minutes) Fast-paced conditioning drawn from proven Warrior training:
- Body Rotations
- Kung-Fu Pineapple Pickers
- Leg swings, crunches, and agility movements
- Speed bag and 4-count drills
Talking points: Physical inventory, relaxation under effort, and building muscle memory. Students learn to listen to their bodies while pushing their limits safely.
3. Skill Block (15–18 minutes) Focused technical instruction and drilling. Students learn and practice the technique of the day (stances, blocks, strikes, footwork, combinations) with detailed feedback. Progressive layering from basics to integrated sequences.
4. Pressure Play / Application (12–15 minutes) Controlled partner drills and gamified scenarios (shoulder tag, figure-8 hands, 1-10 kick drills, mirror work, target challenges). Emphasis on timing, distance, control, and teamwork. No free sparring in early stages — safety and consent always come first.
5. Character / Spirit Lesson + Cool-Down (8–10 minutes) Short discussion or reflection tied to the Three Pillars (Mind: emotional intelligence; Body: discipline; Spirit: stewardship and kindness). Cool-down stretches and group review of the day’s key lessons.
6. Close + Recognition (2–3 minutes) Final salute, positive call-outs (effort above talent), and dismissal. Students leave with a clear sense of progress and honor.
Class Management Tools
- Fixed training spots and the 3-Signal System for instant attention and control.
- Triad Behavioral System (Green/Yellow/Red) with private redirects and public praise.
- Stewardship emphasis: Advanced students help lead segments and support peers.
This consistent daily structure creates predictability, builds habits, and delivers measurable growth in skill, conduct, and character.
Program Highlights
- Progressive Year 1 Foundation curriculum leading to Yellow Belt and beyond.
- Emphasis on safety, consent, controlled contact, and inclusivity for all abilities.

Rules & Regulations
The Kūlia Kajukenbo Warriors program is a disciplined training environment where safety, respect, and character come first. Every student is a steward of the art, their body, their partner, and the training hall. “To be a good steward is to honor what you are doing.”
Core Principles
- Mind: Focus, self-control, and emotional intelligence.
- Body: Proper technique, controlled effort, and safety.
- Spirit: Respect, integrity, compassion, and service.
General Rules
- Respect & Courtesy: Bow or salute upon entering/leaving the hall, to the instructor, and to training partners. Speak and act with respect at all times. No profanity, bullying, or put-downs.
- Attendance & Punctuality: Arrive on time and prepared. Consistent attendance is required for progression and recognition.
- Uniform & Hygiene: Wear clean, comfortable athletic clothing. Trimmed nails, no jewelry that could cause injury. Remove shoes in the training area.
- Class Conduct: Follow the 3-Signal System immediately for attention and safety. Remain in your assigned training spot. No talking during instruction or drills unless asking a focused question.
- Safety First: Controlled contact only. Use the clear “STOP” command if needed. Report any discomfort or injury immediately. No horseplay or uncontrolled techniques.
- Stewardship: Help your partner, encourage others, and clean up after class. Older or more experienced students assist younger ones.
- Triad Behavioral System:
- Green (focused & respectful): Public praise and recognition.
- Yellow (distracted): Private redirect and coaching.
- Red (disruptive or unsafe): Reset or removal from activity, with parent communication if repeated.
Training-Specific Rules

- No full sparring without explicit permission and direct supervision.
- Give full effort in warm-ups, drills, and cool-downs.
- Ask questions respectfully during appropriate times.

Promotion & Discipline Advancement (including Yellow Belt) is earned through consistent rule adherence, skill development, positive conduct, and stewardship. Violations are addressed privately first, with escalation only when necessary. Positive behavior is celebrated daily.
Parent/Guardian Partnership We work together to reinforce these standards at home. Parents are encouraged to review rules with their child and communicate any questions or concerns promptly.
By following these rules, every student contributes to a safe, focused, and honorable training environment where true growth can occur.
Curriculum & Requirements
The Kūlia Kajukenbo Warriors Year 1 Foundation program follows a structured, progressive curriculum spread across the full school year (~36–40 weeks). Training builds skill, character, and leadership step by step, culminating in Yellow Belt and early stewardship recognition.
